One of Finland’s largest municipal energy companies, Vantaan Energia, has relied on OpenCO2net’s expert assistance and services for several years. Vantaan Energia generates and distributes electricity and district heating, while also providing energy and circular economy services to its customers. The company has developed its climate action over a long period of time. It has also systematically refined the emissions calculations for its own operations and district heating products. As its latest step in this development, Vantaan Energia has set emission reduction targets approved and validated by the SBTi.
The collaboration began with Vantaan Energia’s Scope 1–3 emissions calculation
The collaboration between Vantaan Energia and OpenCO2net began back in 2024, when Vantaan Energia wanted to calculate its own Scope 1–3 emissions for 2023. At that stage, the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) was set to apply to a wide range of companies of various sizes, Vantaan Energia being one of them. Wanting to prepare for the directive’s requirements well in advance, OpenCO2net’s experts were called in to conduct an organization-wide emissions calculation in accordance with the ESRS E1 and GHG Protocol standards.
Although the scope of the CSRD directive changed and its requirements no longer applied to Vantaan Energia, the company has continued its own sustainability efforts and reporting. After the first round of calculations, Vantaan Energia wanted to automate its own Scope 1–2 emissions calculations. OpenCO2net provided assistance at this stage as well. Emissions reported in accordance with emissions trading monitoring methods were supplemented with other Scope 1 emission sources, as well as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. The emission factors selected by experts were then linked to the correct emission sources in Vantaan Energia’s ERP system.
Following the first round of calculations, OpenCO2net has continued to provide consulting services for 2024 and 2025 Scope 3 calculations. During the consulting project, OpenCO2net has been responsible for defining the scope of the calculation and ensuring that emissions are calculated in accordance with the relevant standards. The calculations are performed using our platform’s carbon footprint calculator, which utilises our comprehensive OpenCO2 emissions database.
More Detailed Information Through Product-Specific Carbon Footprint Calculations for District Heating
Energy companies also play a significant role in helping their own customers reduce emissions. This means they receive numerous requests for information regarding the emissions related to the energy services they provide. To better respond to these customer requests, Vantaan Energia decided to determine the greenhouse gas emissions from its own district heating in accordance with the ISO 14067 standard. Throughout the project, the upstream emissions from district heating were analyzed in greater detail. In the future, Vantaan Energia will be able to use the resulting calculation model to easily yet accurately calculate the average emission factor for district heating independently.
“Calculating the emission factor for district heating on a product-by-product basis gives us more precise information about where district heating emissions originate, and we can better respond to our customers’ requests for information. The project with OpenCO2net went smoothly, and the resulting calculator will make our calculation work easier in the future.”

Vantaan Energia’s SBTi targets were validated in spring of 2026
The latest significant step in Vantaan Energia’s climate work has been setting Science Based (SBTi) emission reduction targets in accordance with the Paris Agreement. The GHG Protocol standards-based Scope 1–3 emissions calculations, conducted several times already, provided a solid foundation for setting emission reduction targets. OpenCO2net’s experts assisted in defining the emission reduction targets and supported Vantaan Energia throughout the validation process. SBTi approved Vantaan Energia’s short-term emission reduction targets in the spring of 2026.
“Setting SBTi targets was an important part of our company’s climate work. During the target calculation and validation process, OpenCO2net provided us with expert assistance and support in addressing questions related to emissions calculations, which made the validation phase easier and faster.”
