Excel emissions calculator streamlines Evantia’s scope 1–3 calculations

A customized Excel emissions calculator was developed for Evantia, making it easy to calculate the company’s scope 1-3 emissions. The calculator only includes emission sources relevant to Evantia, and it is kept up to date with annual updates.

Evantia is an expert in accessible communication and interpreting services, operating nationwide across Finland. The company’s range of services includes sign language interpreting and sign language translations, communication instruction and training, as well as plain language services.

“During 2025, we drew up a corporate responsibility program for Evantia, which meant we also needed to calculate our emissions. We operate in a very value-driven way and want to put our values into practice in our everyday work. Our values are described in our value statement: We are responsible experts who move forward boldly while respecting others. Therefore, being the first player in our field to develop a responsibility program was a very natural step for us, and emissions calculations are a natural part of it.”

Evantia’s CFO Maarit Källman and CEO Petri Maliranta.

Project progress step by step

At the beginning of the project, we discussed the principles of emissions calculation and the requirements set by the GHG Protocol standards for the calculator. Evantia introduced us to its operations, and we identified the company’s emission sources. We also agreed on a schedule for completing the calculator at the beginning of the project.

OpenCO2net was responsible for developing the calculator based on the initial data provided by Evantia. The starting point for the calculator was that it should comply with emission calculation standards and be highly automated and easy to use. A carefully designed and built emissions calculator ensures that the calculation is reliable and effortless. The calculator is based on the up-to-date emission factors in the OpenCO2 database, which are annually updated by OpenCO2net using the OpenCO2 API interface solution.

At the end of the project, we reviewed how to use the calculator and explained how it works. The user only needs to enter the necessary initial data, such as the electricity consumption of the office, and all calculations are performed automatically in the background. The results of the emissions calculation can be easily viewed in a summary table at the end.

“The project went very well, and with the help of OpenCO2net’s professionals, we now have a high-quality and, above all, easy-to-use emissions calculator. We can trust that the emissions calculation has been done correctly and in accordance with requirements, and we can easily do reliable emissions calculations ourselves in the future.”

Excel emissions calculator minimizes human error

The customized calculator only includes emission sources related to Evantia’s operations, which makes entering the initial data straightforward. The calculator has been pre-set with the correct emission factor for each of Evantia’s emission sources. Since all calculations are performed automatically, the amount of human error is also minimized.

The emission factors were calculated in accordance with standardized guidelines. Primary data, i.e., emission data obtained directly from suppliers, was used in the calculator whenever it was available. In the absence of primary data, emission factors were selected for the calculator primarily based on physical quantities such as mass or number of items. Euro-based emission factors were only used in the calculator if calculation based on physical quantities was not possible. The Euro-based emission factors were adjusted for inflation to improve the reliability of the calculation. When selecting emission factors, it is also important to pay attention to their timeliness, geographical coverage, and source reliability, among other things. For more information on reliable emission factors and the automation of emission calculations, see our previous blog post.

Evantia’s calculator will be updated annually by OpenCO2net. The interface makes updating emission factors to the latest versions quick and reliable. In addition, any emission sources included in the calculator can be modified in the event of changes in the company’s business operations compared to the previous year.

OpenCO2net offers comprehensive, standards-based carbon footprint calculators and tools to support companies in their climate work. With our OpenCO2 API interface solution, the nearly 8,000 emission factors in our emissions database can also be imported into Excel-based emissions calculators. The interface gives you access to reliable emission factors that are easy to keep up to date, even in Excel.
