Posintra, a development company of Eastern Uusimaa, wanted to offer a possibility for companies in Porvoo to familiarize themselves with their greenhouse gas emissions as part of the CO2Jump – take the leap to tackle climate change together project. Twelve companies from Porvoo took advantage of this offer, gaining access to OpenCO2net for SMEs for six months. The access included a carbon footprint calculator for companies, as well as webinars and carbon footprint training.
The companies involved in the project operate in a wide range of sectors. Therefore they were also offered company-specific coaching, during which OpenCO2net experts worked with the companies. They reviewed their emission sources and emission calculation standards from the perspective of the specific company and industry.
CO2Jump – take the leap to tackle climate change together project was launched in 2023. Training related to emissions calculation and the opportunity to use a carbon footprint calculator were added in the second year.
“The Co2Jump project has developed a climate partnership model in collaboration with SMEs in Porvoo and the City of Porvoo, in which partner companies set climate targets based on their own starting points. Emissions accounting has helped companies to better identify the most significant sources of emissions in their operations.” Says Posintra’s project manager for the CO2Jump project, business developer Anna Pyyhitiä.
Maanrakennus Forsström
Maanrakennus Forsström is an earthworks company that provides a wide range of services to both private households and businesses. In addition to earthworks, the company’s services also include transportation, maintenance, and factory services.
Maanrakennus Forsström joined Porvoo’s climate partners in 2024, as responsibility has been a part of the company’s operations for a long time. Although reducing the carbon footprint in the earthworks sector is not entirely straightforward, the company still wants to learn more about it. Maanrakennus Forsström has sought to reduce its own emissions through its actions; transport has been optimized and waste has been recycled and reused as efficiently as possible.
“It has been interesting to be involved in the project. We have gained new insights and ideas on how to reduce our carbon footprint in small steps. Emissions accounting could be a tool for our company to monitor and compare the development of our carbon footprint in relation to our operations.” says the CEO of Maanrakennus Forsström Gunilla Forsström-Nyman.
PL Rakennus
PL Rakennus is a family business based in Porvoo, offering its customers a wide range of construction and earthmoving services. PL Rakennus joined Porvoo as a climate partner in 2024. Joining the project was important for the company to be able to meet its customers’ responsibility requirements. Environmental responsibility and its impact on supply chains have grown significantly in recent years. This is reflected in more than just large companies.
This year PL Rakennus continued activities related to the project, including emissions calculations. Emissions from in-house operations have already been mapped out, and for PL Rakennus it is essential to calculate emissions related to fuels, for example. Together with OpenCO2net’s experts PL Rakennus examined how different land management options affect emissions generated at construction sites when transport distances vary and old soil can be reused at other sites.
“In addition to the Co2Jump project, we have conducted research into better utilization of surplus soil with the support of the Green Transition Fund, and we will continue this project in the future as far as possible.” says the chairman of the board of directors of PL Rakennus Pekka Lindbald.
Brunberg
One company that calculated its greenhouse gas emissions was the confectionery factory Brunberg in Porvoo. The company joined the project last year by making a climate commitment for 2024. This year, its responsibility work was expanded and the company began calculating its Scope 3 emissions using the OpenCO2net tools.
Responsibility covers both social and economic issues in the company’s operations, in addition to environmental responsibility. In terms of the environment, Brunberg has already taken several measures to reduce its own impact on the environment; the electricity and district heating used by the company are renewable, and water and energy consumption are monitored and efforts are made to reduce them as effectively as possible. Brunberg’s goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations by 50% per kilogram produced by 2030. To this end, emissions accounting and monitoring are also important tools in developing environmental responsibility.
“The Co2Jump project gave us a good start in drawing up our responsibility plan. The introduction of the OpenCO2net tool made calculations easier and more accurate. In the fall of 2025, we plan to create an emissions reduction roadmap for the company, and we will continue to use the OpenCO2net tool to calculate indirect emissions in the value chain.” says the CEO of Brunberg Katarina Enholm.
The carbon footprint calculator serves as a tool for companies’ climate work
On May 22, the companies participating in the second development round of the project signed their own climate commitments with the mayor of Porvoo, thereby becoming part of the Porvoo Climate Partners network. Some of the companies included observations and lessons learned during the emissions calculation in their climate commitments.
Effective tools, such as the carbon footprint calculator and the up-to-date emission factors in the OpenCO2 emissions database, are key to successful climate work; when the quality of the calculations can be trusted, it is also easier to take climate action. When errors and the amount of work can be minimized, the significance of the company’s own actions and the reduction in emissions can be seen more reliably. In addition, resources can be used for planning and setting emission reduction targets and implementing them, rather than for emissions calculation.
OpenCO2net offers emission calculation tools, such as carbon footprint calculators and emission factors, for companies of all sizes! We offer subscriptions for both SMEs and large companies. In addition, our experts help companies in the form of various training and consulting services. If you need help with climate issues, please contact us!
