Pa-Hu is a pioneer in the Finnish packaging industry with 80 years of experience. The product range includes corrugated cardboard and cardboard packaging for both consumer products and industrial needs.
The CEO of Pa-Hu, Hans Suominen, says that at Pa-Hu the goal is to move forward in responsibility matters through concrete action; The process is kept transparent, and goals are only set once it is clear what they are based on.
Pa-Hu begun by calculating the company’s scope 1-3 emissions
Pa-Hu’s emissions calculation begun with the calculation of the company’s scope 1-3 emissions. The calculation revealed that 98% of the company’s emissions originate in the value chain. They are therefore a part of the scope 3 emissions. In Scope 3, category 1, i.e., purchased products and services, became the most significant emission category. The purchased products and services include among other things raw materials of the packaging, such as cardboard. The next most significant emissions categories were transportation and commuting.
The calculation for scope 1-3 was carried out in collaboration with experts using the OpenCO2net calculation tool. Pa-Hu was responsible for collecting the initial data and delivering it to OpenCO2net. OpenCO2net’s experts assisted in the data collection, carried out the calculation, and finally prepared a report.
“In the scope 1-3 calculation everything was taken into account as it is required. The calculation provides Pa-Hu with the desired transparency and also highlighted areas for development that need to be taken forward.”, Suominen concludes.
Pa-Hu continues company level calculations with the OpenCO2net subscription
Pa-Hu decided to purchase enterprise-level emissions calculation rights on the OpenCO2net platform. The first calculation carried out as a consulting project enables the calculation to be copied as the basis for the following year’s calculation on the OpenCO2net platform. This speeds up the calculation considerably and makes it easy even for a beginner to calculate emissions.
Pa-Hu calculates its products’ emissions with a customized carbon footprint calculator
At Pa-Hu it has been noticed that customers are increasingly asking for information about the carbon footprint of products. To answer to these questions Pa-Hu decided to develop a carbon footprint calculator for packaging in collaboration with OpenCO2net.
The customized calculator is implemented on the OpenCO2net platform and it is based on the OpenCO2 emissions database, which consists of over 8,000 emission factors. With the Pa-Hu calculator it is possible to determine the emissions of different packaging products effectively and comparably. Calculation using the individual calculator is simple and reliable, as experts have selected the best emission factors for the company’s use and the calculator’s structure complies with industry standards. The calculator can also be used to print out a product carbon footprint report, which can be sent to the customer.
“The carbon footprint calculator provided us with a functional tool, which we can use to bring value to the customer”, Suominen comments on the customized calculator developed for the company.
Pa-Hu’s emissions accounting is moving forward with determination
Even though Pa-Hu has already done a lot to improve its responsibility, the work is not over yet. For Pa-Hu responsibility means continuous improvement, and therefore Pa-Hu continues both company and product level emissions calculation with the OpenCO2net tools.
Suominen has been pleased with the emissions calculation projects carried out in collaboration with OpenCO2net. He states that OpenCO2net’s experts thoroughly familiarized themselves with Pa-Hu’s operations during the projects and carried the projects forward with a professional and consultative approach.
OpenCO2net offers tools and services tailored to the needs of companies for calculating their carbon footprint. Our calculators and calculations are based on the world’s most recognized standards and an extensive, up-to-date emissions database, whose emission factors have been validated by our experts.
