Is using Guarantees of Origin the same as carbon offsetting?

No. The Guarantees of Origin system is an official EU‑approved mechanism that allows a company to demonstrate the purchase of renewable or zero‑emission energy and therefore report zero market‑based Scope 2 emissions. Carbon offsetting, by contrast, is based on the carbon credits purchased from voluntary carbon markets, and the GHG Protocol does not allow offsets to be counted in a company’s Scope 1, 2 or 3 emissions.
