NK Tekniikka is a Finnish electrical company that provides electrical contracting and installation services throughout Finland. Recently, NK Tekniikka has developed its sustainability efforts in a goal-oriented manner. Emissions accounting has been an essential part of this development work. The collaboration between OpenCO2net and NK Tekniikka on emissions accounting has already carried through several projects.
As the emission calculation for companies became relevant again at the beginning of the year, NK Tekniikka decided to expand its own emissions calculation to also include Scope 3 emissions for the year 2025. The groundwork for the company’s Scope 1–3 emission calculation had been well prepared, as NK Tekniikka had already calculated its Scope 1 and 2 emissions for 2024. In addition, a project-specific emissions calculator was developed for NK Tekniikka in the fall. It is used to determine emissions from electrification projects.
Automating Scope 1–3 calculations with an Excel emissions calculator
Since the automation of emissions calculations for NK Tekniikka’s project-specific emissions calculator was already well advanced, the decision to continue developing the Scope 1–3 calculations in Excel was made. Scope 3, Category 1 includes products and services purchased by the company. It is often the most labor-intensive category in an organization’s emissions calculation. Calculating the emissions of purchased products had been successfully automated in the project-specific calculator. This significantly sped up NK Tekniika’s Scope 1–3 emissions calculations. The emissions calculator simply imports the procurement list into the calculator. The selection of applicable emission factors and the calculation of emissions are then performed automatically within the calculator.
The automation is based on the OpenCO2 API
The automation process utilizes the OpenCO2 API, which retrieves up-to-date emission factors validated by experts from the OpenCO2 emissions database. The emissions database is the most comprehensive in Finland and contains approximately 8,000 reliable emission factors, all of which can be imported into Excel via the interface. Updating the emission factors to the latest versions in Excel takes just a couple of clicks during the annual Scope 1–3 calculation.
NK Tekniikka has started its emission reduction efforts at a rapid pace
In the previous Scope 1 and 2 calculations, the company’s own vehicles emerged as the most significant source of emissions. Over the course of the year, the company has grown and with that, the total fuel consumption of its own vehicles has also increased. However, NK Tekniikka managed to cover the increased demand almost entirely with renewable fuel. In addition, NK Tekniikka has decided to electrify its vehicle pool and has increased the procurement of zero-emission electricity for its offices.
“Now that we’ve calculated emissions covering all Scope 1–3 emissions for the first time, we have a much clearer picture of the full scope from which our emissions originate. We will continue our efforts to reduce emissions from our own operations, and as we update our sustainability program this year, we will certainly also consider potential emission reduction measures and targets related to Scope 3 emissions. And the Excel calculator we’ve now created is a great tool for us; it will allow us to do our own emissions calculations for our annual sustainability reporting going forward.”
“Working with OpenCO2net has always gone smoothly and professionally. Things are done as agreed, communication is straightforward, and all responses are quick. As a client, we’ve been kept well informed throughout the project and have always had a clear picture of where things stand. So, it has once again been a pleasure to work together!”
