NK Tekniikka is an electrical engineering company carrying out a wide range of electrical contracting and installation projects in Finland. Project-specific emissions calculator helps compare the climate impacts of projects
At NK Tekniikka there was a need and interest in determining not only the company’s own emissions but also the project-specific emissions of electrical contracting and installation work. For this purpose, the decision to develop a new Excel-based calculator, implemented with the help of OpenCO2net experts was made.
“This year, we have taken major steps towards more responsible operations, for example with our recently completed responsibility program and the ISO 14001 environmental certification, which we are aiming to achieve by the end of the year. As an important part of this development work, we wanted to better understand where emissions are generated in our projects and offer the same to our customers. Project-specific calculations provide us and our customers with concrete information to support decision-making, allowing us to compare the impacts of different implementation options and steer electrification solutions in a more low-emission direction. This supports both our own responsibility goals and our customers’ sustainable construction goals.” says Anna Väänänen, the development manager at NK Tekniikka.
With the OpenCO2 API, emission factors are always up to date – even in Excel
When designing the Excel calculator, it was essential to make it as long-lasting and as easy to update as possible. With regard to emission factors, the OpenCO2 API interface ensures that the calculator always has access to the best and latest emission factors. The calculator uses the interface to retrieve the emission factors needed for the calculation from the OpenCO2 database. The database contains more than 8,000 emission factors carefully selected and validated by experts.
The interface allows the calculator to update emission factors whenever desired, even for each individual calculation. This makes it easy to keep the calculator updated with just a few clicks, saving considerable time and manual work.
Calculator automation simplifies and speeds up calculations
For NK Tekniikka it was important that that the emissions calculation becomes an easy and natural part of the project. We were able to incorporate many solutions into the Excel calculator that make emissions calculation for different projects as simple as possible without compromising the reliability and accuracy of the results.
The calculator has been designed to be as easy, reliable, and quick to use as possible. OpenCO2net has ensured that the calculator contains accurate emission factors based mainly on physical quantities and is based on an applicable calculation standard. The calculator operates mainly automatically, which minimizes the possibility of errors and makes it easy to use. The user only needs to enter project-specific activity data and a list of materials. The calculator takes care of the rest.
