In 2023 Heart Hospital acquired OpenCO2net’s Enterprise subscription and has since been calculating its Scope 1 and 2 emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol. Now Heart Hospital wanted to extend its emissions calculation to scope 3 emissions. For this purpose, OpenCO2net created a scope 3 calculation template for Heart Hospital on the OpenCO2net platform. The calculation template was implemented in close cooperation. Heart Hospital investigated available data and OpenCO2net’s experts built the template to meet the customer’s needs.
Identification of emission sources and selection of emission factors
Scope 3 includes indirect emissions related to the company’s value chain. For example, emissions from purchased products and services, transportation, waste, and travel are included in value chain emissions. Calculating Scope 3 emissions is often the most challenging part of emissions accounting for companies, and those new to the process may find it difficult to know where to start.
At the beginning of the project, together with OpenCO2net, Heart Hospital investigated all emission sources in the value chain that should be included in the calculation. Based on the data, OpenCO2net’s experts selected the correct, up-to-date emission factors for the calculation template. The structure of the calculation template and the selected emission factors comply with the requirements of the GHG Protocol standards, meaning that the user of the calculation template only needs to enter the correct data into the template.
Scope 3 calculation template speeds up calculations for the coming years
Calculations on the OpenCO2net platform will remain effortless in the coming years, as it is possible to copy the completed calculation and automatically update all emission factors to the latest ones. The calculation can be easily supplemented with updated and more accurate data, as the calculation template can be modified according to your own needs. For example, data obtained directly from suppliers can be imported into the calculation as your own emission data or emission factor.
“At the moment, it can be challenging to obtain emissions data for the products or services purchased from different suppliers. However, suppliers have begun to investigate the emissions of their products and services, so we expect that more comprehensive emissions data will be available in the future,” says Development Manager Janne Björkengren from Heart Hospital.
Corporate calculation feature makes combining calculations easy
Heart Hospital has previously calculated its own as well as its subsidiary’s (SK Hankintapalvelut) scope 1 and 2 emissions using the OpenCO2net enterprise subscription. Included in the platform’s newest features, the Corporate calculation feature makes combining scopes 1-3 easy.
“The cooperation with OpenCO2net’s experts has been excellent from the beginning and the OpenCO2net calculator is smooth and easy to use. It was therefore natural to continue the cooperation and extend the calculation to scope 3. The new Corporate calculation feature makes it easier to combine calculation data and saves a lot of time, as the calculations of different companies no longer need to be reviewed separately”, Björkengren says.
