Serres aims to be a pioneer in environmental matters within healthcare. To achieve this goal, it is essential to understand the lifecycle impacts of products across the entire value chain. In collaboration with OpenCO2net, the company calculated reliable, data-driven carbon footprints for its products.
Serres examined the carbon footprints of Serres Suction bags that are used in hospitals. The examination was done by using a customized calculator developed on the OpenCO2net platform. In addition, the carbon footprint of Serres Nemo, a fluid disposal device designed to empty suction bags, was calculated.
Serres Oy is a Finnish company focused on surgical fluid management solutions. Its product range includes a Serres Suction system that ensures safe fluid collection and a Serres Nemo fluid disposal device. The Serres Suction system is used daily in over 75,000 operations around the world.
To provide reliable information about the products’ carbon footprints, Serres acquired a customized OpenCO2net calculator based on the ISO 14067 standard. The OpenCO2net calculator efficiently calculates the carbon footprints of multiple products. It also enables the comparison of carbon footprints for suction bags made from different materials and in multiple sizes. The calculator utilizes OpenCO2net’s extensive emissions database. It contains around 8,000 emission factors collected from various sources to support companies in their emissions calculations.
“It is of primary importance for us to provide hospitals with transparent and reliable information about the carbon footprints of Serres suction bags and Serres Nemo”, comments Maria Lavonen, product and innovation manager at Serres. “We conducted the calculations in collaboration with the expert team at OpenCO2net. The partnership with OpenCO2net has significantly accelerated the carbon footprint calculations and facilitated the life cycle assessment of our products”, continues Lavonen.
Reliable data and carbon footprint calculation
Serres aims to be a sustainable pioneer in patient fluid management and help hospitals achieve their emission targets.
Hospital operating rooms are significant sources of waste and emissions. Therefore it is important for Serres to provide data-driven reports that help hospitals with understanding the sources of their emissions, reducing generated waste, and developing responsible practices within hospitals.
“We are exploring, among other things, new material choices and methods that can significantly reduce the carbon footprint in the future. Product emissions calculation has required Serres to learn a lot, but this is an important part of implementing our sustainability strategy”, comments Lavonen.
OpenCO2net Oy provides tools and services for carbon footprint calculation. Our calculators and calculations are based on the world’s most recognized standards, as well as a comprehensive emissions database, with emission factors validated by our experts.
