Sustera helps their customer in sustainability work – Case

, , ,

Sustera uses OpenCO2net’s tools to calculate its customers’ carbon footprints. The tools have accelerated the calculation process and allowed Sustera to focus on the core of its expertise. It being the comprehensive advancement of the company’s customers’ sustainability.

Sustera is focused on the sustainability of the property and construction industry. The company helps its customers with sustainability work, such as planning and implementing sustainability programs and reporting on sustainability. Additionally, Sustera provides outsourced sustainability expert services. They allow businesses to utilize the expertise of a sustainability specialist for a fixed term.

An important part of sustainability reporting has also included calculating customers’ carbon footprints. This has been carried out using the Consultant subscription of OpenCO2net. The service includes OpenCO2net’s extensive emissions database containing around 8,000 emission factors, standard-based calculators for calculating the greenhouse gas emissions of products and organizations, a carbon handprint calculator, as well as emission scenario and emission monitoring tools. Sustera has had the Consultant subscription since early spring 2023.

“During the last seven years, emissions calculation has become much more profound. Scope 3 emissions calculation will become mandatory for many companies with the advent of the CSRD, and its calculation is not as straightforward as scope 1 and 2 calculations. Therefore, a functional calculation tool is extremely important to keep the overall process manageable”, says Lotta Kauppinen, sustainability manager at Sustera.

Why did Sustera choose OpenCO2net?

OpenCO2net was chosen as the service provider due to its clear user interface and good customer service. The tool has made the calculations efficient and smooth, freeing up more resources for result analysis, action plan development and implementation.

“With the OpenCO2net tool, we don’t have to focus on searching for emission factors but can concentrate on what matters most to us: analysing results and planning emission reduction measures”, continues Kauppinen.

The time to act is now

Companies included in the first wave of CSRD must report their sustainability data for 2024 by early 2025. The directive’s scope will then expand annually. For instance, all listed companies will fall under CSRD by 2027 at the latest, when they must report their 2026 data.

“If a company is coming under the scope of CSRD in the coming years, now is the time to act. By preparing in advance for upcoming requirements, panic and rush can be avoided. Taking preparation step by step and delving deeper over time enables turning future requirements into a competitive advantage”, concludes Kauppinen.

OpenCO2net Oy offers tools and services for carbon footprint calculation. Our counters and calculations are based on the most well-known standards in the world, as well as an extensive emission database, the emission coefficients of which are validated by our experts.
