A Portuguese home textile company, Têxteis J.F. Almeida S.A., tested the OpenCO2net carbon footprint platform for calculating its greenhouse gas emissions.
Têxteis J.F. Almeida S.A. (JFA) is a Portuguese company in the home textile sector that manufactures yarn and finished textile products. The company’s number of employees is 836 and the revenue is 57 M€. Hence, JFA is one of the companies that the EU regulation will oblige to calculate their greenhouse gas emissions. It is done in accordance with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the ESRS E1 standard for climate change. OpenCO2net provided the tools and support for JFA to start calculating its scope 3 emissions.
The trial was part of OpenCO2net’s Market Explorer project funded by Business Finland. One of the project’s objectives was to test the feasibility of using the OpenCO2net carbon footprint platform in the Portuguese textile sector and get feedback on using OpenCO2net tools. In the trial, JFA received a test period for the OpenCO2net tools and conducted the calculations independently. They also received support from OpenCO2net during four one-hour sparring sessions. Thus, it was possible to carry out the calculations for a large textile industry company with little assistance. Simultaneously the company’s expertise in emissions calculations was enhanced.
JFA was highly satisfied with the trial and OpenCO2net carbon footprint platform tools. The company’s sustainability manager Mariana Gomes describes OpenCO2net as a “simple and easy to understand platform with many emission factors available”. As a potential area for development, she mentions that the emissions database could include even more emission factors specifically for the textile industry’s manufacturing processes to cover the whole value chain.
Expanding and maintaining the emissions database is one of OpenCO2net’s primary tasks, and updates are made twice a month. As a part of this project, the emissions database was supplemented with Portugal-specific emission factors for fuels, purchased energy, chemicals, and textile materials.
OpenCO2net Oy provides tools and services for carbon footprint calculations. Our calculators and calculations are based on the world’s most recognized standards, as well as a comprehensive emissions database with emission factors validated by our experts.
